SEO software reviews (True and fake): How to tell the difference
Jul 20th, 2009 by admin

You just can’t afford not optimizing your website for the search engines any more. While search engine remain the major source of online traffic search rankings are directly tied to the bottomline of every online business big or small. That’s why if you want to earn a decent income online you just absolutely need to either do SEO or have it done. And since everyone’s optimizing their sites the competition in the organic SERPs is really fierce. The good ol’ ways of purely manual optimization are gone. Today you need to be equipped with SEO tools and software of all kinds to do more in less time in order to outrank your competition. That’s why you need to pick the best marketing tools you can get. One of the most popular ways of choosing SEO software (just like any other online or offline product) is by reading reviews and testimonials first. In the real world the first thing you do is probably ask your friends and kin about there experience with a particular good or service. Since it’s highly unlikely that you grandma has any clue to what you’re talking about asking about SEO tools, the best place to look for SEO software reviews is online. So without much thinking you just go to Google or whatever your favorite search engine is, type in “SEO software reviews” into the text box and hit find. Then you just click through the results reading different reviews to compare opinions and make up your mind. Sounds easy right? But this is where the problem begins. The thing is that instead of finding different opinions and getting to know all the pros and cons of a particular product you only find overwhelmingly positive praises and sales pitches disguised as reviews. They’ll throw at you tons of evidence of how this or that SEO software package made Jon and Jane a million bucks in the first two weeks even though they never even launched it and perhaps didn’t even have a website. Soon you’ll discover that all of them are either written according to one template or are simply identical. These are affiliate reviews which are more of sales pitches designed to make you buy the product. Sometimes they will grab your attention with a catchy title like “SEO Elite is a scam” or “Why you shouldn’t buy Web CEO”. But as soon as you start reading the review it will quickly turn the other way round stating that this is the best product you can get and how about you buy it right now. Now don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing bad about affiliate reviews. Ethical (if that’s the right word to use) affiliates will always use the product themselves and will only promote it if it’s really of high quality and is worth the money asked for it. The question is how do you tell the difference between the scam reviews and the real ones. The fake sales-pitch-reviews are usually found on squeeze-page websites, where you’ll hardly find anything else apart from the fake review itself. These types of sites are usually PPC powered (which means they get most of their traffic from paid search ads) and they don’t depend on returning traffic. The real reviews, the ones you can trust are usually found on trusted sources: web magazines, niche websites and blogs, news portals and blogs of authority bloggers. These people have worked hard to earn their authority and reputation in the niche and they generally won’t risk it by pushing the products that are not worth it. Even the paid reviews done by power bloggers are usually quite objective and consider both the strong and weak points of the product or service in question. Objective seo software reviews and detailed comparison of seo tools to help you navigate the world of SEO products and make an educated choice.

How Do I Block A Website
Jul 20th, 2009 by admin

In this article I’ll show you how to block a website for all users on a Windows XP or Windows Vista PC using the Windows HOSTS file. This method is a free, effective way to block websites in an instant. Let’s Take Care Of The Requirements

Setting up your computer to block websites is easy, unfortunately it’s also easy for people (your kids for example) to undo your changes to the Windows HOSTS file. In order to prevent this from happening we need to setup at least 2 user accounts.

One account will be an Administrator (you) and the other account will be a limited user account (your kids). Your Administrator account should have a strong password that no one else knows (especially your kids). The limited user account(s) do not have to have passwords, but they can if you want.

Limited user accounts prevent people from making changes to the computer. Therefore your kids will NOT be able to install new software, change settings or delete system files.

Setting up administrator and limited user accounts is easy but they are quite a few steps. So, I have created a article that shows you how to create a limited user account in Windows XP and Vista. I’ll also show you how to make an administrator account

Please make sure you have your Administrator and limited user accounts setup before reading the rest of this article. How Your Computer Finds Websites

Before we start talking about what the Windows Host file is, lets look at how your computer finds websites.

1. You open your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox). 2. You type in an address like www.yahoo.com and click enter. 3. Your computer queries the Windows host file for the ip address of yahoo.com This ip address looks like 206.190.60.37. 4. Since your HOSTS file does not have an entry for yahoo.com your computer will query the DNS servers listed in your TCP/IP settings for the ip address of yahoo.com. 5. Your computer gets the ip address for yahoo.com and your browser displays the yahoo.com home page.

So, those 5 steps above are actually a simplistic explanation for how your computer finds and loads a website.

Block Websites With The Windows HOSTS File

Ok, since we now know that our computer looks for websites locally first (in the HOSTS file) we can edit the contents of the HOSTS file so that our PC NEVER goes on the internet to find websites. Sounds sorta confusing huh?

Basically it means every website we add to our hosts file will not load if we set the value of the website to 127.0.0.1 (which is your computer). Here is an example.

Your kids are going to myspace.com a lot and they are picking up all kinds of nasty viruses (yes, many viruses come from myspace.com pages). You need to put a stop to it. Here’s how:

1. Login as Administrator 2. Click Start (or the little globe in the bottom left if on Vista) 3. Click Run (in Vista just type where it say’s “start search”) 4. Type in the word: Drivers. Click Enter. 5. Double Click the Etc folder. 6. Right Click the hosts file, then click properties. 7. Uncheck the read only checkmark if it is checked. 8. Click apply, then click OK. 9. Double Click the hosts file. 10. Windows will ask you to choose the program to open the file with. Click Notepad 11. You will see an extry that looks just like: 127.0.0.1 localhost 12. We are going to add our myspace.com entry below this entry. Type 127.0.0.1 myspace.com 13. Click Save 14. Now, try going to myspace.com….you can’t. You computer thinks that myspace.com resides on your local pc, of course it doesn’t, so the site never loads. 15. Done! Add any other sites or domains you’d like to block.

Amazing 10 Google Search Tricks
Jul 19th, 2009 by admin

In this article I will list down the search tricks which I use quite frequently. Be it finding time, meanings or watching the cricket score, searching PDF’s, with Google as the search engine life cannot be more simpler. Here are the 10 most amazing Google Search tricks:

1. Different Types of Files at your will
How many times would you have asked for materials (PDF, PPT, DOC) for a particular topic from a friend? Its almost everyday that we might have the necessity to ask them either for knowledge, preparing a presentation, white-paper or for case studies. Such times it mostly difficult to look out what to exactly search for because most of the times you don’t know about the topic at hand. But this petty keyword unleashes its lethal power at such occasions.

Let’s say I want to implement a case study on SOA which means I have to read a lot of information for SOA. So I just have to find materials which might have already been uploaded on the web in the form of PDF’s, DOC’s or PPT’s. These materials can be easily obtained by doing a search for:

2. Scholarly Search
If you want some authenticity of the materials then it would be better to find the materials from educational institutes or universities. For this use the Google scholar search. But suppose you don’t like to switch to Google scholar search you can add the same query with an additional parameter to the normal Google search box,

3. Meanings of any word in an instant
Now you do not have to carry a dictionary or install a dictionary software just for the purpose of finding out a meaning of a word. With the wealth of information in Google’s hands, its a piece of cake to find out the meaning of the word. Just use the define: keyword. The meaning would of course be displayed but also a set of other links which might have an alternative definition are also given out with the link to read more about it.

You would argue here that, a dicitionary gives out more information than this. But what about words that don’t actually fall within the vocabulary. Suppose you want to know what SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) is then you would have no choice. Google Search comes to your rescue in this case,

4. Find the time of any location
Many of us might be probably working for client which are based at different locations. And communication has to be carried out frequently carried out in such cases. But before a communication you have to know which time zone the location is falling into otherwise you would be causing a disturbance.

I have seen people installing time zone software for showing the time of the location they would be calling to. But with Google at your hands you don’t have to install any software. It would be just simple to use a query for finding the current time such as,

psst….look closely the time on the little clock graphic. It also shows the perfect time!

5. Weather at your fingertips
I had been to GOA for a Christmas vacation in the last week of December. But I made a mistake of not finding out the temperature of GOA before leaving. Had I known that it is hot even in the winter I would not have made the mistake of carrying additional luggage consisting of blankets and jackets.

If you are thinking to visit a place it is useful to know what the temperature of the place is before hand, it can make efficient packing. Google helps you here too. Just use this query without asking anybody or waiting for the news to make a weather report. I wish I had thought of this!

6. Google does live commentary too!
Indians are cricket fanatics. But its amusing to see the organizations here trying to put together tactics to devoid cricket lovers from wasting time to watch the cricket scores instead of doing their work. What I think they fail to understand is that by blocking the live cricket scoring sites they are actually making the employees more curios and provoking them to hunt for proxy networks or listen to the radio or chat with their friends elsewhere.

Jokes apart, you actually don’t need proxy networks to view the live cricket scores if you at least have access to Google. If you want to find the latest info about all the cricket matches then just type,

But if you want to find out only about a particular match then use only the names of the two playing nations,

Remember that the scorecard will come only when the play is going on.

7. Calculate with your browser
Every OS has a calculator inbuilt but when the browser is the thing which is constantly open whey bother to open up a calculator. Open Google and straight away type your mathematical expression. You can go all the way from basic arithmetic to trigonometrical expressions. This is simply amazing stuff accomplished by Google.

8. Compare your currency with others
Now that the dollar is declining, the rest of the world must be busy trying to check the impact of the dollar on their currencies. But first of all one must know how much a particular currency amounts to when cashed in another currency. Google’s inbuilt currency converter just does this.

9. Keep track of the stocks
With the booming stock market it is very important to track the stocks on a day to day basis. Putting a stock ticker in the search box is the most obvious thing you would think of. But it is not always you would remember the stock ticker, you should add the keyword “stocks:” to the company name.

The best part of the obtained result is that it provides a chart which shows the trend in the company’s stock along with important statistics.

Note: Currently the results are restricted to the companies listed in the US stock markets.

10. Wanna find some faces?
This is most interesting trick. You might be needing images for various occasions and searching for images is the most difficult thing because what we expect might not be possibly mapped to a query. But Google has a parameter in place for images in situations we need an image which describes a face.

Suppose I search for the term “happy” then the Google results page displays smileys. But I would like to use images of happy people. Even if I choose the term as “happy face” the results don’t show images which contain people. For this there is a parameter “imgtype” which you can use with the URL. For this put in the URL as follows:

10 Top SEO Tips
Jul 18th, 2009 by admin

This 10 top seo tips

Be bold. Use the <b> </b> tags around some of your keywords on each page. Do NOT use them everywhere the keyword appears. Once or twice is plenty.

Deep linking. Make sure you have links coming in to as many pages as possible. What does it tell a search engine when other web sites are linking to different pages on your site? That you obviously have lots of worthwhile content. What does it tell a search engine that all your links are coming in to the home page? That you have a shallow site of little value, or that your links were generated by automation rather than by the value of your site. Here is an example of deep linking, in this case to my personal happiness workbook.

Become a foreigner. Canada and the UK have many directories for websites of companies based in those countries. Can you get a business address in one of those countries?

Newsletters. Offer articles to ezine publishers that archive their ezines. The links stay live often for many years in their archives.

First come, first served. If you must have image links in your navigation bar, include also text links. However, make sure the text links show up first in the source code, because search engine robots will follow the first link they find to any particular page. They won’t follow additional links to the same page. You can see this in action at the link to the home page on this web site monitoring page

Multiple domains. If you have several topics that could each support their own website, it might be worth having multiple domains. Why? First, search engines usually list only one page per domain for any given search, and you might warrant two. Second, directories usually accept only home pages, so you can get more directory listings this way. Why not a site dedicated to gumbo pudding pops?

Article exchanges. You’ve heard of link exchanges, useless as they generally are. Article exchanges are like link exchanges, only much more useful. You publish someone else’s article on the history of pudding pops with a link back to their site. They publish your article on the top ten pudding pop flavors in Viet Nam, with a link back to your site. You both have content. You both get high quality links. (More on high quality links in other tips.)

Titles for links. Links can get titles, too. Not only does this help visually impaired surfers know where you are sending them, but some search engines figure this into their relevancy for a page.

Not anchor text. Don’t overdo the anchor text. You don’t want all your inbound links looking the same, because that looks like automation – something Google frowns upon. Use your URL sometimes, your company name other times, “Gumbo Pudding Pop” occasionally, “Get gumbo pudding pops” as well, “Gumbo-flavored pudding pops” some other times, etc.

Site map. A big site needs a site map, which should be linked to from every page on the site. This will help the search engine robots find every page with just two clicks. A small site needs a site map, too. It’s called the navigation bar. See how the second navigation bar at the bottom of Last Minute Florida Villas is like a mini-site map?

6 Cool & Useful Google Chrome Tricks
Jul 17th, 2009 by admin

1. Detach a Tab To a New Window

Firefox 3.5 now has it but it was Google Chrome which introduced it. You can easily click and drag a tab outside of the main browser window to a new window.

2. Drag Downloads To Desktop / Folder

Another cool feature similar to the tab detach feature. You can drag and drop downloads to any folder or the desktop directly from the browser.

3. Learn The Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts help in increasing your efficiency while working on the computer. Google Chrome has its own set of useful keyboard shortcuts which you can find here.

4. Use Resources Page To Check Website Load Time

Right click on a web page and click on ‘ Inspect element ‘ . Then click on ‘ Resources ‘ tab to check what parts of a web page are taking time to load. Useful for developers and webmasters.

5. Make the Most Out Of Address Bar

Google Chrome’s address bar works as Google search bar too. Hence you could do things like conversions, calculations and dictionary lookups directly from the address bar.

6. Drag & Resize Text Box On a Web Page

Another cool feature. You can drag any text box at the corner and increase its size. Like in the screenshot below, I can resize the comment box of this blog easily by dragging it downwards.
